À partir de 1837, Louis-Philippe engage une vaste politique de remeublement du Château de Versailles, destiné à devenir un musée national tout en conservant un faste monarchique. De nombreux meubles sont alors spécialement commandés pour les galeries, salons, et appartements.
Est notamment livré par le tapissier Charles Munier le 4 juillet 1837 un ensemble de banquettes à dossier au Grand Trianon, dans le vestibule du roi et de la reine dont quatre sont conservées au Château de Versailles, sous les numéros d’inventaires T.562 C1 à T.562 C4. Ces dernières ont été inventoriées en 1839, 1852, 1855 et en 1894 et pendant un certain temps exposées dans la salle des Etats Généraux.
Les banquettes que nous présentons portent un ensemble de marques et inscriptions directement en lien avec ce mobilier, notamment les marques L.P à l’encre et au fer, ainsi que les pochoirs des inventaires du Grand Trianon GD T 514, GD T 377, GD T 3261 ainsi que T 2050. Cette concordance précise, complétée par l’estampille de Charles Munier, tapissier ayant livré celles qui sont dans les collections du Château de Versailles nous confirme qu’il s’agit d’un exemplaire de cette suite de banquettes.
