The helmet bowl and mempo Edo period, 19th century
the twenty-four plate russet iron bowl with raised ridges, terminating in a copper-gilt and silver five-stage tehen kanamono of stylised floret form, the first stage engraved with foliate scrolls, russet iron peak, red lacquer underside, the large turn backs applied with silver hiki mon inset into Dutch leather panel, silver rim, two-tiered black lacquer solid plate neck guard with spaced lacing in dark blue braid, the wood maedate in the form of a shikami decorated in black, gold and red lacquer, inset glass eyes, the russet iron ressei mempo forged in a single piece with fierce expression, flared nostrils and open mouth, chased and chiselled overall with yasurime file markings, inlaid gold moustache and chin tuft, red lacquer interior, two-tiered black lacquer throat protector laced in matching braid
