This piece was initially designed for the exhibition 'Furniture for the Ritual of Life' at Blum Helman Gallery, New York, 1987. Only a small number of pieces, including the present lot, were ever produced.

Sottsass, a master of many materials, here directly confronts marble, a material he once avoided. 'This collection is about developing as much as possible the relationship between materials... Many years ago, I hated marble as a symbol of richness and power. Now... I am able to see marble just as a texture, as a natural. Then it becomes very beautiful and gives you nice feelings.'

Sottsass, le maître des nombreux matériaux, se confronte directement au marbre qu'il évitait autrefois. Cette collection a pour but de développer au maximum la relation entre les matériaux « ... Il y a de nombreuses années, je détestais le marbre, symbole de richesse et de puissance. Maintenant ... je suis capable de voir le marbre comme une texture, comme une partie de la nature. Il devient ensuite très beau et donne de beaux sentiments. »
