A FINE LACQUER KUSHI-BAKO [COMB BOX]
MOMOYAMA PERIOD, LATE 16TH CENTURY
the rectangular box with overhanging cover decorated in Kodaiji maki-e style with gold hiramaki-e and a nashiji on a black ground with chrysanthemums, with fitted tray
17 x 14 x 12 cm., 6 5/8 x 5 1/2 x 4 3/4 in.
Many of the utensils used by Toyotomi Hideyoshi are preserved in the Kodaiji Temple said to have been established in 1606. The term Kodaiji maki-e is used not only in relation to the objects of Hideyoshi's household but to other lacquers in the same style and techniques from the latter part of the 16th century as in the present lot.
