Description

Bronzes from the Robert Mayer collects ion, Vienna

NORTHERN ITALIAN, PROBABLY PADUA, CIRCA 1450-1480

PLAQUETTE WITH THE VIRGIN AND CHILD SURROUNDED BY ANGELS

bronze, in an associated Italian, early 16th-century cypress wood frame with Christ as the Man of Sorrows

bronze: 8.7 by 6.8cm., 3½ by 2¾in.

frame: 20.5 by 13.5cm., 8 by 5⅜in.

August von Miller zu Aichholz (1829-1899), Vienna;

Robert Rudolf Theodor Mayer (1874-1974), Vienna;

thence by descent to the present owner

While Rossi (op. cit.) attributed this beautiful model to the Ferrarese sculptor Domenico di Paris (fl. 1443–1501), Warren (op. cit.) has more recently argued for a Paduan origin.
