CIRCLE OF JOSÉ RISUEÑO (1665-1732)
SPANISH, GRANADA, EARLY 18TH CENTURY
PAIR OF RELIEFS WITH BUSTS OF CHRIST AND THE VIRGIN
polychromed terracotta on gilt and polychromed wood, in glazed gilt wood frames
reliefs: 26 by 20cm., 10¼ by 7⅞in. each
frames: 42 by 33cm., 16½ by 13in. each
These masterful small terracotta busts of the Virgin and Christ bear a striking resemblance to the work of the celebrated Granada sculptor José Risueño. Compare with his Virgin Dolorosa in the Museo Nacional de Escultura in Madrid (inv. no. CE1132) and his Head of St John the Baptist in the same museum (inv. no. CE2879). Note also the famous St Joseph with the Christ Child in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. no. 313-1864). Risueño was a master at small scale devotional works in polychromed terracotta.
