Barry Le Va was an American sculptor and installation artist. Trained in his native California, he lived and worked in New York City. Le Va was among the leading figures of post-studio and process art to have emerged in the late 1960s. Le Va is best remembered for his pioneering “scatter pieces” which were installed on the floor. In 1969, he continued to address space with a series of works based on cleavers serially embedded in walls or floors. Later in his career, Le Va produced monumental abstract works, as well as expanding his site-specific installations.

Le Va’s work has been exhibited at the Denver Art Museum, Denver; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York among many others. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
