Frances Hodgkins

This work features a mother and child sitting outside their home engaged in handiwork. Frances Hodgkins did a number of watercolours of a similar theme, partly because women often combined sitting outside their houses with some kind of handiwork or preparation of food, and it was easier to persuade them to be painted than if they were inside their homes. In 1907-8, the period the present work was executed, Hodgkins paid visits to Dordrecht in the Netherlands.
