Arguably one of the most controversial fashion photographers of the late 20th century, Helmut Newton was a pioneer and an innovative image-maker. As seen in this selection of black-and-white nudes (Lots 63 - 67), Newton had an admiration for strong and powerful women. His take on the female nude was unseen at the t.mes , featuring overtones of fetishism, sadomasochism and lesbianism.
Works such as Debra and Red, Exterior, Beverly Hills, 1991 or Untitled I, Bel Air, 1989, created a bridge between fashion, erotica and documentary photography. Newton used his practice to challenge traditional gender norms by bringing to light his dominating and sexually free muses.
