woodblock print, from the series Twelve Subjects of Children (Kodomo Juni-dai), signed Hasui, sealed Kawase, titled as above, publisher's mark (Hotei 'F', circa 1932-42) to the left margin Hanmoto Tokyo Ginza Watanabe mokuhanga-ho (Publisher Watanabe woodblock print store, Ginza, Tokyo), dated Showa rokunen nigatsu saku (made in February, 1931)


Vertical oban: 39.5 x 27 cm., 15½ x 10½ in.

A rare portrait subject by the predominantly landscape artist Hasui, depicting a young boy in an ornate kimono decorated with open fans in a riot of brocade colour. Beside him is an embroidered temari, or 'hand ball'.
