A fine blue and white ‘lotus’ wine cup, Mark and period of Yongzheng | 清雍正　青花纏枝番蓮紋小盃　《大清雍正年製》款

Compare an almost identical cup of this design preserved in the Qing Court Collection, in The Palace Museum’s Collection of Blue and White Porcelains from the Yongzheng Period of the Qing Dynasty, Palace Museum, Beijing, 2017, cat. no. 29; and another in the collection of the Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, included in Porcelain of the High Qing 1662-1795. The Brian S. McElney Collection, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, 1983, cat. no. 20.

This auspicious lotus design closely follows a prototype with origins in the 15th century. Compare two related cups with Chenghua and apocryphal Xuande reign marks respectively, excavated from a late Chenghua context and included in A Legacy of Chenghua. Imperial Porcelain of the Chenghua Reign Excavated from Zhushan, Jingdezhen, Tsui Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1993, cat. no. C71; and another cup, of Chenghua mark and period, preserved in the National Palace Museum, Taipei (accession no. gu ci 016241).
