This sofa relates directly to a sofa in the collects ion of the Museum of the City of New York (acc. no. 77.21) that was made by Duncan Phyfe for William Bayard (1761-1826) in November 1807 at a cost of $65. Bayard ordered four such sofas, in two separate invoices. A difference being the stamped brass roundels on the terminus of the arm scrolls. For additional information see Peter M. Kenny, Michael K. Brown, Frances F. Bretter and Matthew A Thurlow, Duncan Phyfe: Master Cabinetmaker in New York, (New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art; New Haven, CT: Distributed by Yale University Press, 2011), p. 162, pl. 4. Another nearly identical sofa is in the collects ion of the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum (acc. no. 1957.0729) (see Charles F. Montgomery, American Furniture: The Federal Period, in the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum. (Winterthur, DE: Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum, 1966), no. 278).
