A Rare Pair of Early Ottoman Silver Torah Finials, Barashe, dated 1783
chased with foliate motifs on punched ground, spiraled stems below matching knops, hung with teardrop bells, engraved with Hebrew inscriptions
Height 10¾in. (27.4 cm)
Around the midsection of both finials: “Consecrated to God for the holy community of Barashe in the year [5]543 [1783]. It/They may not be sold or redeemed.”
The Jewish settlement in Barashe, located in Iraqi Kurdistan, dates from the Middle Ages. The community had just one synagogue but a lively scholarly culture. Jews made up the greater part of the community, but between 1927 and 1929 most of them emigrated to Jerusalem, settling in what became known as the Kurdish quarter.
