A German Silver Torah Shield, Frankfurt, dated 1798

boldly chased with lions flanking a crown within a border of running leaves, hung with five bells, fitted with five double-sided portion plaques and three single-sided, chased oval suspension hooks, struck with city mark, another unclear mark on front of shield and hook, possibly W. Scheffler, Goldschmiede Hessens, p. 324, no. 304

Height with bells 11 in. (28 cm)

The central panel reads: “Renewed by the sextons Moses ben Seligman Ber, may his light shine, and Anshel Ber, may his Rock and Redeemer keep him, from the holy community of Heddernheim, [5]558 [1798].”

Heddernheim is a community north-west of Frankfurt, now absorbed into the city. In 1760, the Jewish population replaced the old synagogue, possibly built the 16th century, with a new synagogue at 33 Alt-Heddernheim. In 1771 the Archbishop of Mainz, ruler of the community, issues a set of Jewish regulations. By 1836, the town had the largest Jewish population in Hesse-Nassau.
