Description
A German Parcel-Gilt Silver Torah Shield, probably Augsburg, early 18th century
with pierced and cast border of large flowers, applied with two free-standing columns topped by lions supporting a crown, the portion plaque compartment cast with scrolls and birds above openwork gallery, the crown set with stones, chased with Tablets, hung with three bells, applied shield to lower body with Hebrew inscription including signature "Tsoref" and date equaling 1733, other changes probably of same date
Height including bells 13¾in. (35 cm)
The tablets featuring the Ten Commandments are unusual in that they are written on fourteen, rather than ten, lines and do not include two of the Commandments at all, while four others are written out more fully than they would be otherwise.
In the cartouche below: “This is my handiwork in which I glory—[I,] Uri Tsoref of Schaffa [present-day Czech Republic], in the year: ‘See, I have singled out by name Bezalel son of Uri’ [Ex. 31:2] [=1733].”
