Description

A Large Near Eastern Silver Wedding Belt Buckle, possibly Afghanistan, mid 19th century

in the form of two paisleys, densely chased with foliage enclosing panels engraved in Hebrew with biblical verses relating the marriage of Isaac and Rebecca.

Length 11¾in. (29.8 cm)

Sotheby's, New York, 25 November 1981, lot 71.
Jay Weinstein, A Collector’s Guide to Judaica, London: Thames & Hudson, 1985, p. 195, fig. 263, described as 18th century.
Inscribed across both parts of the buckle: “Raising her eyes, Rebecca saw Isaac. She alighted from the camel and said to the servant, ‘Who is that man walking in the field toward us?’ And the servant said, ‘That is my master.’ So she took her veil and covered herself. The servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. Isaac then brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he took Rebecca as his wife. Isaac loved her, and thus found comfort after his mother’s death” (Gen. 24:64-67).
