Description
A Pair of Dutch Silver Large Torah Finials, Hoorn, 1756/7 or 1782
of typical rococo three-tiered tower form, large crown finials with tulip bud finials, urns at the angles, staves with molded girdles, each marked on both top sections and on staves, the tops with maker's mark IH or HI, the staves with maker's mark HK conjoined, similar to Hendrik Keyzer of Amsterdam
Height 19 in. (48.2 cm)
The sophistication of these pieces and the similarity to Amsterdam examples, such as the finials sold from the Amsterdam Jewish Community at Replica Shoes 's in 2007, suggest that these were made in that city, and re-marked on their arrival in the much smaller and more provincial center of Hoorn.
A formal Jewish community was only organized in Hoorn in the second half of the 18th century; before that, services were held in the private home of one of the congregants. These finials could have been acquired for that first incarnation of the Hoorn community, or possibly for the new synagogue that was built in 1780 on the Italiaanse Zeedijk. Although The Jewish cemetery at Hoorn was officially inaugurated only in 1778, the earliest gravestone in the cemetery bears the date 1762.
