This refined bronze of a stag is an elegant model by Antoine-Louis Barye. Barye created several variations on the stag model, including the present version with its left leg raised.

The present bronze is the chef-modèle, which is the original and unique bronze model made by the artist from the sculpture’s finished plaster and wax prototype. The bronze was finished to a high standard after the casting process and shows fine detail. Barye’s production of a chef-modèle from his finished plasters illustrates the sculptor's intricate working practice. Few chef-modèle sculptures appear on the market, as the majority reside in museum collections.
