This large watercolour is dated 1785, the year after Smith had made a tour of Wales for the first time.


Earlier, between 1776 and 1781, Smith had lived in Italy. He travelled there under the patronage of George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick and had worked closely with fellow watercolourists William Pars, Thomas Jones and Francis Towne.
