where acquired by Ronald John Rickett (d. 1970),
by family descent to the present owners

The Frenchman, François Louis Thomas Francia, came to England in 1795 and only returned to Calais in 1817. In London he became a student at Dr Monro's academy and was a particular friend of Thomas Girtin. In 1811 he was appointed Painter in Watercolour to the Duchess of York.

Upon his return to France, where he spent the remainder of his life, he lived in Calais. It was there that he met the young Richard Parkes Bonington, to whom he gave lessons.

The present work has descended in the family of Ronald John Rickett, known as John, who was a director of British Pictures at Replica Shoes ’s in the 1960s.
