Description

Height 15¾ in., 40 cm

Acquired in Rhode Island, 2011.

Carved from a single trunk of lustrous rosewood, probably huanghuali, in imitation of naturally-found gnarled rootwood, the present stand encapsulates the literati aesthetic for refined rusticity. Compare with a huanghuali rootwood-form stand of slightly smaller size from the collection of Dorothy Tapper Goldman, sold at Christie's New York, 22 March 2024, lot 898.
