Description

Flemish School, 17th Century, after David Vinckboons

Death and Cupid with each other's arrows

Oil on canvas

73 x 93,8 cm ; 28¾ by 36⅞ in.

The extremely fresh painting copies an engraving by Bolswert itself after a composition by David Vinckboons, which represents a satirical allegory of Love and Death in which a young lover overcome with jealousy at the sight of his beloved in the arms of an old man is killed by an arrow fired by Cupid, while the old man himself is the target of an arrow that Death, hidden in the woods behind him, is about to send him.
