A revolutionary moment in the history of Piaget came in 1964, when the house introduced dials made from ornamental stones such as jade, coral, tiger’s-eye, and many others, including malachite, as showcased in the present example. The splendor of these materials, paired with cases of diverse shapes and enhanced by the nuances of precious metals, made each model unique and highly collects ible.
At the t.mes , the technical feat of crafting gemstone dials was made possible by the ultra-thin Piaget 9P movement and Piaget 12P movement. In Geneva, Piaget’s jeweler-artisans achieved the remarkable task of cutting these stones to a thickness of only seven-tenths of a millimeter.
Some of Piaget’s most original collects ions from the late 1960s through the 1970s featured bracelet wristwatch designs that were truly out of the ordinary. Conceived for modern women, these creations boasted wide dials and inventive bracelet constructions that blurred the line between watchmaking and jewelry.
The present example reflects the design language Piaget explored during this period. Its oval links are sculptural and sit comfortably on the wrist, while a modern hinge mechanism allows the bracelet to articulate smoothly. The case and bracelet are engraved, adding texture and depth to an already striking design. The gold case enhances the elegance of the green malachite dial, beneath which the 9P movement continues to run to this day.
Extraordinary design is t.mes less, and this piece perfectly illustrates why Piaget established itself as one of the most creative houses in watchmaking, offering bold, unconventional designs for those who appreciate glamour combined with exceptional craftsmanship.
This example has been preserved in overall excellent condition.
