[Langland, William]
The Vision of Pierce Plowman, Newly Imprynted After the Author's Olde Copy ... Whereunto is also Annexed, the Crede of Pierce Plowman. London: by Owen Rogers, dwelling neare unto great Saint Bartelmewes Gate, at the Sygne of the Spred Eagle, 1561
4to (186 x 127 mm). Black letter, woodcut initials and tailpiece; washed and pressed, some browning towards end, but a wide-margined copy. Later English blind-tooled and -ruled calf to style, morocco lettering-piece; some light wear at extremities.
Fourth edition of the Vision of Piers Plowman, attributed to William Langland, without The Crede (most copies of the Vision are found without it).
REFERENCE:
STC 19908; ESTC S114908; Hayward 12; Pforzheimer 799 (“‘The crede’ … is as usual lacking. Its rarity, about half a dozen copies have survived, is probably due to contemporary proscription because of its Wyclifite doctrine … Except as linked in the title, the Crede has no connection with the Vision). Not in Grolier, Langland to Wither.
