Painted in 1929, the present work dates from Grigoriev's first visit to South America, which also explains the inscription in Spanish on the reverse. The artist had been invited to teach at the Academy of Arts in Santagio de Chile, arriving there in the summer of 1928. The following year, he visited Argentina, Urugay, Brazil and Ecuador.
