A Karabagh gallery carpet, South Caucasus, circa 1882

Depicting a lady and gentleman at the upper end of the field, with an inscription cartouche including the date AH 1299 (1882 AD), the inscription reading 'Ramadan mubarak ...[the rest illegible], this gallery carpet was perhaps woven to celebrate a marriage.  The design itself is of European, probably French, inspiration.
