Description

Property from the Estate of Patsy R. Taylor

Colima Greenstone Animal

Late Preclassic, circa 300 - 100 BC

Length: 7 3/4 in (19.7 cm)

Gray and Patsy R. Taylor, Greenwich, acquired by 1971
This is a particularly large example of the playful animal amulets and pendants made in the Late Preclassic era, found in the Colima and Guerrero regions. Realistically carved with a well-modeled arched back, strong legs, incised feet, and an alert face with a flattened snout and tapered nostrils. The tightly curled tail forms a loop.

For similar stone animals, see Daniel F. Rubín de la Borbolla, ed., Escultura precolombina de Guerrero, Mexico City, 1964, cat. nos. 154-157.
