Meiji period, late 19th century


woodblock print, diptych, from the series New Selection of Eastern Brocade Pictures (Shinsen azuma nishiki-e), the right sheet signed Yoshitoshi and sealed Taiso, published by Tsunashima Kamekichi in 1886


Vertical oban diptych: each sheet approx. 37.1 x 25.5 cm., 14⅝ x 10⅛ in. 

The firefighter Kotengu Heisuke and the sumo wrestler Yotsuguruma Daihachi dueling during the famous brawl between firefighters and wrestlers at the Shinmei Shrine in Shiba in 1805.
