The Property of a European Collector
A suji-bachi [helmet with raised ridges]
Edo period, 18th century
the sixty-two plate russet iron bowl with raised ridges, terminating in a five-stage copper-gilt and shakudotehen kanamono of typical chrysanthemum form, russet iron mabisashi [peak], the fukigaeshi [turnbacks] in stenciled Dutch leather and applied with copper-gilt choji mon [clove crests], silvered copper fukurin [ornamental border] chased and engraved with scrolling folliage in European manner, four-tiered black lacquer and leather Hineno-jikoro [close-fitted neck guard] with sugake odoshi [spaced lacing] in blue braid, the gold and black lacquered maedate [forecrest] of later date, probably 20th century, in the form of a wild boar, red and white pigment details, inset eyes, this lot has an accompanying wood stand, but not the one illustrated in the photographs
The bowl to peak: 28 cm., 11 in.
The shikoro to peak: 33 cm., 13 in.
