Originally conceived in 1954, the Rolex GMT-Master was developed for pilots and global travelers, its creation driven by a commission from Pan American Airlines. The model quickly became a commercial success, prized for its exceptional legibility and its practical 24-hour bi-rotating bezel, which allowed wearers to track multiple time zones with ease. The inaugural reference 6542 was succeeded in 1959 by the updated ref.1675, which introduced a metal bezel insert in place of the fragile Bakelite. Produced until 1980, the 1675 became one of the defining GMT-Master references of the era.
Its successor, the ref.16750, served as an important transitional model. Externally it closely followed the design of the 1675, but inside it carried the upgraded caliber 3075, featuring a higher beat rate of 28,800 vph and the convenience of a quickset date. Produced for only eight years, the 16750 offers the charm of the early GMT-Masters paired with meaningful technical advancements, making it a particularly desirable choice for collectors today.
