MEDICAL WORKS IN LATIN

A collects ion of three works on gunshot wounds by Maggi and Rota, and Vigo's book on surgery, comprising:


i. Maggi, Bartolomeo. De vulnerum sclopetorum, et bombardarum curatione tractatus. Bologna: Bartolomeo Bonardo, 1552, 4to, a few woodcut illustrations, with blank leaf CC3, later half vellum, [Edit16 46655], lacking all plates, first few leaves slightly damaged and repaired with slight loss, occasional soiling

ii. Rota, Giovanni Francesco. De tormentariorum vulnerum natura, et curatione liber. Bologna: Anselmo Giaccarelli, 1555, 4to, woodcut on title-page, with blank leaf A4, contemporary limp vellum, [Edit16 25787], lower hinge broken (another work extracted from back of volume)

iii. Maggi, Rota, Ferri and Botallo. De sclopettorum et tormentariorum vulnerum natura, et curatione, libri IIII. Venice: Guglielmo Valgrisi and Giovanni Alessi, 1566, 8vo, woodcut illustrations, early manuscript notes on A8v, without final blank, contemporary vellum, [Edit16 16220], lacking both plates, new endleaves

Maggi (1477-1552) and Rota (1520-1558) were both surgeons in the papal army. Maggi "wrote an important work on military surgery. He showed that not all gunshot wounds suppurated and he discarded cauterization, treating such wounds with white of egg and salt water" (Garrison-Morton).
