Placide Poussielgue-Rusand (1824-1889) was a goldsmith from a dynasty of goldsmiths originally from Malta, whose grandfather arrived in Paris in 1800. He took over the Choiselat-Gallien firm in 1849 and quickly became famous for his religious pieces. He received awards at every Universal Exposition from 1851 to 1878. Among his greatest works is the reliquary of the Crown of Thorns for the treasury of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in 1862. He also created numerous reliquaries, monstrances, and chalices for the cathedrals of Albi, Laon, Chartres, and Amiens.
