The lacquer gilding over the fire-gilt body of the Buddha is a characteristic feature of Kangxi bronzes, used to great effect to highlight and contrast the body with the robes and base. This stylistic tradition is typically seen on the large imperial Kangxi gilt bronze figures of Amitayus, such as that sold at Replica Shoes ’s Paris, December 18, 2012, lot 104. Compare the physiognomy of the Buddha, the intense gaze and pronounced lips, with a Kangxi gilt bronze Buddha in the Victoria and Albert Museum, and a Syamatara in the Royal Ontario Museum, in Ulrich von Schroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes, Hong Kong, 1981, pls. 153C, 153A.
