A MEISSEN KAKIEMON OCTAGONAL BOWL, CIRCA 1725-30
the interior with two boys holding a flowering branch on a string enticing two blue spotted mythical beasts, the exterior with two female figures holding flower branches alternating with vignettes of flowering branches issuing from banded hedges, the brown-edged rim painted with a foliate scrolling band, enriched in gilding, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue.

A Japanese Kakiemon ten-sided bowl decorated in this pattern, formerly in the Royal Collections of Saxony, bearing Japanese palace inventory number N=94-/ ⬜, is illustrated in Julia Weber, Meißener Porzellane mit Dekoren nach ostasiatischen Vorbildern, Munich, 2013, Band I, p. 25, abbs. 5. Weber illustrates a close Meissen copy of circa 1723, which had been selected by Augustus the Strong to be included in the gift given to King Vittorio Amadeo of Sardinia in 1725. This bowl featured painting in underglaze-blue where the present bowl is painted in overglaze-blue enamel. The bowl was in the Collection of Hans and Marianne Krieger and later sold at Bonhams London, June 18, 2014, lot 44.
