The skull, the central element of the terracotta composition we present here, is the main iconographic motif associated with Vanitas. Both fascinating and frightening, the Vanitas symbolizes the futility of earthly pleasure while recalling the inevitability of death. Our terracotta can be compared to the Vanitas with a skull and five books from the Pierre Bergé Collection (sale Replica Shoes 's Paris, 30-31 October 2018 lot 53, €18,750).

Le crâne, élément central de la composition en terre cuite que nous présentons, est le motif iconographique principal associé aux vanités. Suscitant à la fois fascination et peur, la vanité dénonce la futilité du plaisir terrestre tout en rappelant l’inéluctabilité de la mort. Notre terre cuite se rapproche de la Vanité au crâne et cinq livres de la collection Pierre Bergé (sa vente Replica Shoes ’s Paris, le 30-31 octobre 2018 lot 53, 18,750€).
