NETHERLANDS SCHOOL, 16TH CENTURY | ALLEGORY OF THE DEATH

Even though the painting is now in a difficult condition, this thick panel was probably a votive work with the coats of arms from a hardly identified family. The main scene represents the death and a young woman fighting for the survival of the man represented in the center: this style reminds us of Jan Gossaert’s work, called Mabuse (1478-1532), allowing us to date this work around the middle of the 16^th Century.

Bien que nous étant parvenu dans un état de conservation lacunaire, cet épais panneau correspond sans doute à une œuvre votive aux armes d’une famille qu’il nous est difficile d’identifier. La scène centrale, représentant la mort et une jeune femme se battant pour la survie de l’homme au centre, n’est pas sans rappeler par son style la peinture de Jan Gossaert, dit Mabuse (1478-1532), ce qui permet sans doute de dater l’œuvre vers le milieu du XVIe siècle.
