Description

Property of a Lady

Gem set and diamond brooch, Georges Fouquet, early 20th century

Composed of carved horn, centering and supporting mabé pearls, inlaid with turquoise cabochons, applied with black, bluish green and silver enamel, decorated with rose diamonds, signed Georges Fouquet, numbered.

Georges Fouquet

The three generations of the Parisian Fouquet family, Alphonse (1828-1911), Georges (1862-1957) and Jean (1899-1984), each adopted and excelled at the prevalent design current of their respective eras: historicism, art nouveau and art deco. George Fouquet was a leading jeweller of the art nouveau style together with the likes of Lalique, Vever and Falize.

The brooch presented here, is characteristically art nouveau in its choice or materials, horn, mother-of-pearl, enamel and turquoise. However, details in the setting of the turquoises display a certain Egyptian influence prefiguring the budding art deco style, which took generous cues from ancient Egyptian art for developing a fresh, geometric vocabulary of decorative patterns.
