Villagos is the result of an aesthetic project initiated by Victor Vasarely in the wake of the historical avant-gardes and the Bauhaus in the late 1920s in Budapest. Articulated around two major axes: the secularisation of art and the setting in motion of abstract forms, this ambitious project intended to give substance to “worlds that have hitherto escaped the investigation of the senses: the world of biochemistry, of waves, of fields, of relativity.”
Between science and fiction, stellar chronicle and poetic imagination, Villagos refers to the “signals of the worlds”, the “metagalaxies”, the “interstellar landscapes”, the “noise of quasars” and the “beating of pulsars” that Vasarely brings to light in the early 1970s. With its multi-dimensional polychromy and axonometric perspective that draws our attention to the pitfalls of vision, this work emblematic of the most important period of Vasarely's career thus echoes not only his cosmic reveries but his desire to develop a visual and universal alphabet understandable to all.

Villagos est le résultat d’un projet esthétique initié par Victor Vasarely dans le sillage des avant-gardes historiques et du Bauhaus dès la fin des années 1920. S’articulant autour de deux grands axes : la sécularisation de l’art et la mise en mouvement des formes abstraites, ce projet ambitieux doit donner corps aux « mondes qui, jusqu’ici, ont échappé à l’investigation des sens : monde de la biochimie, de l’onde, des champs, de la relativité. »
Entre science et fiction, chronique stellaire et imaginaire poétique, Villagos fait référence aux « signaux des mondes », aux « métagalaxies », aux « paysages interstellaires », au « bruit des quasars » et au « batt.mes nt des pulsars » que met à jour Vasarely au tout début des années 1970. Avec sa polychromie multidimensionnelle et sa perspective axonométrique qui attire notre attention sur les pièges de la vision, cette œuvre emblématique de la période la plus importante de la carrière de Vasarely fait donc écho non seulement à ses rêveries cosmiques mais à sa volonté de mettre au point un alphabet visuel et universel compréhensible de tous.
