An English delftware Royal commemorative `Boscobel Oak` plate, London, circa 1715-20
painted and sponged in blue, green and red with the oak tree reserved with a portrait of the future Charles II among the three crowns, within a border of concentric lines

This charming naïve plate commemorates the future Charles II hiding in the Boscobel Oak following the Battle of Worcester in 1651. This celebrated moment in British Royal history was depicted on delftware from about 1660 until the mid 18th century. Based on stylistic comparison these appear to have been produced to coincide with key events in the Stuart era. Starting with the restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, the Glorious Revolution, the Hanoverian Uprising of 1715 and the ‘45 Jacobite rebellion. The style of the present plate is firmly in period of the 1715 rebellion. For a related plate see Ross E. Taggart, The Frank P. and Harriet C.
