Description

Council of Trent. Canones, et decreta sacrosancti oecumenici et generalis Concilii Tridentini sub Paulo III, Iulio III, Pio III pontificibus max. Rome: Paolo Manuzio, 1564

First quarto edition, with text based on the first folio edition.

4to (175 x 128 mm). Interleaved throughout (presumably circa 1850 at the time of binding). Italic type, 32 lines. collation: A- Z4 AA-MM4 NN2: 284 leaves. (Title somewhat soiled, and with repaired cuts on either side of printer’s device [presumably from removal of ownership inscription], intermittent mostly marginal dampstaining, one leaf with closed tear.)

binding: Nineteenth-century English half vellum (186 x 142 mm), marbled boards, two metal clasps and catches, edges stained red, by Wright & Bailey of Cheltenham (active ca. 1849-1850). (Marbled boards with light wear, vellum slightly soiled.)

provenance: Georgius Trivultius (inscription on title-page verso, many leaves with brief marginal notations in the same neat hand of the inscription) — one interleaved page with an English translation of facing text done in an exceedingly neat 19th-century hand — Hartung & Hartung, Munich, 13-15 May 2003, lot 184. acquisition: Purchased from Phillip J.
