Description
Caesar, Gaius Julius. Commentarii Caesaris recogniti per Philippum Beroaldum. [Lyon: Baldazare de Gabiano?], 14 July 1508
A Lyon counterfeit, but not imitating an Aldine edition; the text was plausibly taken from the Bologna folio edition of 1504, edited by Filippo Beroaldo and printed by Benedetto Faelli (Edit16 8144).
8vo (152 x 94 mm). Italic type, 30 lines plus headline. collation: a-z8 A-O8: 296 leaves (last leaf blank). Three eighteenth-century maps inserted after a3, a few early marginal annotations. (Worming, staining to final leaves in particular.)
binding: Later French calf (160 x 107 mm), spine with raised bands in five compartments, second with red gilt lettering- piece others with repeat arabesques tooled in gilt, edges specked red and brown, marbled pastedowns. (Joints weak, restoration to extremities.)
