Description
BURR, DAVID H.
An Atlas of the State of New York. Ithaca: Stone and Clark, 1840
Folio (565 x 460 mm). Elaborately engraved title with vignette view of the Hudson near Fishkill, 52 hand-colored maps, including 2-sheet map of Manhattan (third edition). Some minor and mostly marginal foxing, a little more evident to text. Modern half morocco.
The second atlas produced, with South Carolina's being the first. Burr's years-long project was done at the behest of the State Legislature and was lauded for its detail, particularly in this improved edition that includes many of the schools and town halls in the rural counties. The large folding map of Manhattan and the desirable map of Long Island are often lacking.
