The issues of Two Worlds included here make up all five installments of "Work in Progress" [here termed "A New Unnamed Work"] which were published by Samuel Roth in New York between September 1925 and September 1926, reprinted (unauthorised by Joyce) from European publications.

Transition was founded by the editor and poet Eugene Jolas and his wife Maria. Between April 1927 and April-May 1938 they ran serially all of Part I, the first three chapters of Part II and all of Part III of Finnegans Wake. This lot includes nine of those issues.

Two Worlds Monthly reprinted 14 episodes of Ulysses in bowdlerised form between July 1926 and October 1927. Eleven are included in this lot. The unauthorised publication provoked the "International Protest" signed by 167 artists and writers which was printed in transition in April 1927, and an injunction against the publisher Samuel Roth and Two Worlds Publishing Company on 27 December 1928.
