The first edition was published by Shakespeare & Company in Paris in May 1929.
Joyce is reputed to have written the hostile 'Letters of Protest' himself, and there are a number of quotations from Work in Progress as it had been appearing in transition. Other contributors include Samuel Beckett (his first appearance in print: 'Dante... Bruno. Vico... Joyce'), Frank Budgen, Stuart Gilbert, Eugene Jolas and William Carlos Williams.
