The architectural precision that defines Raphaella Spence’s hyperrealist approach to the contemporary urban landscape was shaped by her upbringing in a family of eminent architects—both her grandfather and father served as Architects to the Queen of England. Working before the advent of digital design and rendering software, the Spence office was particularly renowned for its highly detailed, hand-drawn architectural renderings. Early exposure to these meticulously crafted drawings informed Spence’s understanding of realism as a bridge between direct observation, photography, and painting. In The Judge, the Venetian canal is rendered with crystalline clarity. Light, reflection, and perspective are carefully orchestrated to emphasize order and stillness within the living city.
