Lot Details
Description
of square section, the swelling belly rising from a straight foot to a slightly flaring neck, each side of the vessel decorated with three main registers of tight scrollwork, further set with an animal mask handle suspending a loose ring, the cover set with four dragon-shaped finials, Japanese wood box
h. 27.8 cm
The form of the current vessel is relatively more compressed than other more commonly seen Warring States period to Western Han dynasty examples. A comparable Warring States period fanghu is preserved in the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai, illustrated in Chen Peifen, Xia Shang Zhou qingtongqi yanjiu [Study of archaic bronzes from Shang, Shang and Zhou dynasties], Dongzhou [Eastern Zhou] vol. 2, Shanghai, 2004, pl. 623.
