The IWC Portugieser is unquestionably IWC Schaffhausen’s most iconic and enduring design. Originally conceived in the 1930s at the request of two Portuguese businessmen, the first Portugieser models were created to offer the precision of a marine chronometer in a wristwatch. Launched in 1939, the Portugieser quickly gained recognition for its unusually large and commanding presence. While the earliest examples emphasized chronometer-level accuracy, the collection has since evolved to feature a wide array of complications—from simple date displays to sophisticated perpetual calendars.

In 2015, IWC celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Portugieser with a comprehensive revamp of the collection. New models and complications were introduced, including the present lot, and much of the existing lineup was updated. The Portugieser Perpetual Calendar from this milestone year retained the familiar aesthetic while undergoing significant refinement. Notable updates include a newly designed arched sapphire crystal, as well as subtle enhancements to both the case and dial.

Powered by an automatic movement with a 7-day power reserve and IWC’s signature Pellaton winding system, the watch now features twin barrels for improved performance. Its perpetual calendar, complete with a four-digit year display, draws its lineage from the 1985 Da Vinci and the ingenious Kurt Klaus-designed module. The current lot, reference IW5034-04, comes in a pink gold case with a striking ardoise dial and is offered with its complete set of original accessories.
