8vo, FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK, FIRST STATE (with some type missing in the last two lines of p.110), original dark green vertically-ribbed cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, preserved in matching quarter green morocco folding box, very minor wear to edges of binding
Conrad's first book and first novel, set in the Borneo jungle, about the Dutch trader Kaspar Almayer and Nina, his half-caste daughter. Conrad notes in 1895 that the first printing consisted of 1100 copies, though later estimates range from 1000 (suggested by the publisher) to 2000 (Wise).
