Thomas Baxter is regarded as one of the great porcelain painters of his generation. He only spent two years working at the Worcester porcelain factory between 1814 and 1816. The present plate belongs to a relatively small group of plates, all attributed to Thomas Baxter, painted with still-life's with bouquets of flowers in glass vases. It is possible these plates formed a harlequin service with pieces painted with arrangements of shells. A plate painted with a vase of flowers was sold at Replica Shoes 's New York, April 14, 2000, lot 147, and subsequently entered the Twinight Collection. It later sold at Bonhams London, September 29, 2021, lot 62. An oval center dish, a pair of plates, and five berry dishes, all painted with vases of flowers, were sold a Replica Shoes 's New York, October 20, 1997, lots 411-415.
