Description

Attributed to Luigi Michelini (circa 1830-1855),

French, early 19th century

Double sided intaglio with Perseus and Minerva

inscribed: ΛΜ [possibly for Luigi Michelini] and ΡΥΧ

carnelian, within a gold swivel ring

marked with a French eagle's head hallmark

intaglio: 12.5mm., 0.49in

Michelini was a pupil of Giuseppe Girometti, who later moved to Paris, where he is described in the 1839 Pocket Companion to Paris as being 'considered to be the cleverest engraver' (as quoted in Holman, op. cit., p. 203). The present Perseus is near identical to the model seen on a cameo from a French private collection, sold in these rooms on 3 December 2019, lot 49.
